The traditional use of Plantain – Plantago lanceolata – as a wound healing plant has been scientifically confirmed, studies have shown that it contains chemicals that disinfect injuries, kill pathogenic organisms, reduce inflammation and speed up the healing process. It is best known for its ability to soothe insect and snake bites, nettle stings, eczema, psoriasis and burns.
Yarrow inspired the name of this ointment… Achilles Charm! Yarrow’s Latin name is Achillea millefolium, named after the Greek hero Achilles. Achilles was said to have used this magical herb to heal his soldier’s wounds. Yarrow is also nicknamed ‘Soldier’s woundwort’, it was often found growing in battlefields and therefore became a trusted ally for soldiers to help cleanse and staunch bleeding wounds. Yarrow contains anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and stypical properties, as well as astringent tannins and resins that help restore the skin.
Calendula officinalis, commonly known as pot marigold, is considered a mainstay in herbal medicine for the treatment of inflammation, to accelerate wound healing and as an antiseptic. Calendula has a rich history of use, especially as a skin herb, dating back thousands of years to ancient civilizations. Ancient Egyptians used this beautiful herb to rejuvenate their skin and help wound healing. In WW1, a Calendula poultice was applied to wounds to prevent infection and inflammation. Nowadays, you often find it in herbal ointments that treat and soothe various skin conditions, from eczema to acne.
Calendula’s powers aren’t just folklore. It contains a range of ingredients that work together to create a powerful healing remedy, including salicylic acid, a powerful anti-inflammatory that encourages tissue repair. The synthesized version of salicylic acid is aspirin, which was first derived from Willow Bark and Meadowsweet.
The Herb Research Foundation reports that test tube research indicates that Calendula contains antimicrobial compounds that can prevent the growth of certain strains of bacteria, fungi and protozoa. High iodine, carotene and manganese, which promote the regeneration of skin cells, have also been found in the plant.
Jojoba Seed Oil:
A natural emollient, Jojoba oil’s resemblance to sebum allows it to absorb easily and easily into your skin, making it a gentle, skin-soothing moisturiser for all skin types. Jojoba oil provides a treatment for various skin infections and is often used for acne-prone skin, mainly due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Jojoba is packed with vitamins and minerals that are essential for both healthy hair and skin, namely vitamin E, B complex, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine and chromium.
Rosehip seed oil:
Nicknamed the liquid gold of skin care. Rosehip seed oil has been clinically tested and shown to help minimize the appearance of scars and wrinkles. It is highly hydrating, light, non-greasy and full of antioxidants, vitamins and essential fatty acids known to correct dark spots and hydrate dry, itchy skin, while helping to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. Rosehip seed oil is rich in Retinoic acid, a pro-vitamin A, which turns your body into retinol, which is commonly known for its very powerful skin renewal properties.
We used unrefined beeswax that comes locally from a small-scale beekeeper in our home country of Essex. Our supplier is so local that we pick it up directly from her home! We opt for beeswax over other waxes because it is a by-product and when produced locally, it has a much smaller carbon footprint than the alternatives, making it a more sustainable option. We think it is important to support local ‘beekeepers’, who love and care for their bees and put them first. In addition, it is a wonderful healing ingredient, it is naturally antibacterial and creates a protective barrier on the skin that helps the recovery of the skin.
Massage a thin layer of ointment directly onto the skin to help soothe, soften and protect.
Some herbs are not advised to take when pregnant. Contact your doctor, midwife or medical herbalist when considering which herbs are suitable. If you have very sensitive skin, I would recommend doing a patch test first. If irritation occurs, stop using it.
Store in a cool dark place, this ointment should be used within 6 months after it is opened.
